How I wish, Jennifer, that it were as simple as my being a sinful bigot. Actually, as a Christian I am doubtlessly far worse than merely that (as I hope you would also say of yourself as a Christian). I am a profoundly broken and needy sinner needing the grace of Christ moment by passing moment. But I am not the One who created the world, nor gave the world its order, nor the One who determines our days or arbitrates truth and error. Believe me when I say, if I had my way, . . . well, I can't imagine, because God has not asked my opinion, but things would be different in a way you would probably like more than hate. If I am wrong (and I very well could be -- I am not nearly as dogmatic as you have concluded), then the last 3000 years of Judaeo-Christian teaching has also been grievously wrong. Could that be? Again, possible, but would a loving God leave us all in the dark for so long? Was Jesus wrong? Was Paul wrong? I believe God has allowed His Spirit to guide and superintend over His people through the ages. But I digress.

You see (and the danger of digital communication is we lose tone of voice -- please hear this with the most gentle tone you can imagine from one you have labeled a hateful ignorant bigot -- please hear this with all the humility I truly intend), I know people from the LGBT community -- and love them. My own dear older brother (with whom I shared a bedroom for the first 18 years of my life) died from AIDS related illness in 1999. We spoke deeply about these things, and I inherited his library after his death -- I read his collection on gay-related theology. I don't speak from complete ignorance -- though I am sure I am prone to error. But it may surprise you that I favor civil unions in order to allow people financial, health, etc., related freedoms they don't presently have but should. I know Christians who struggle with same-sex issues . . . and I believe they are Christians and they need the grace of Christ no more than I do for my sin, be that bigotry or hatred as you say or admittedly for me (and on the same lists in the New Testament with homosexuality and sexual immorality) undying issues of greed, lust, envy, and so many more.

Forgive me if anything I wrote sounded hateful to you. My goal is simply to present historic Christian understanding that has been just ever so recently been jettisoned. And I hope, if you have read so far you may also hear me say I hope my response to you as been in the spirit of Paul's words to the Ephesians: "I therefore, . . . urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all" (Eph. 4:1-4). Blessings to you Jennifer.

Your argument hinges on your belief that homosexuality is aberrant behavior. It doesn't take you long to equate it with sexualizing middle schoolers and pedophelia. Shame on you and your ignorance.

I will tell you what I firmly, believe. Jesus Christ did not come down onto this earth to create the Christian religion the way you practice it, with your outrageous and completely egotistical view that you know God's will through your very selective reading of the Bible. Meanwhile you remain ignorant of biology, history, and the real meaning of love, including God's love.

You are nothing more than an ignorant bigot who quotes the Bible to defend his ignorant bigotry. It's hateful. I will not attempt to enlighten you with the truth. Your mind and heart are completely closed. And you know what? Your Facebook commenters are right. You are old, and your old ideas, like slavery (also supported with Bible quotes by people like you) will die with you.

I will pray for your soul.

Mike,
Have just finished reading Harvest USA's The Church and the Homosexuality Debate. I knew most of its arguments but needed to be "freshened up." Also read a piece this week by Dr David Cashin from CIU Professor of Intercultural Studies. It was called the Hammer and the Anvil. He is noticing trends in Europe where the Anvil is that all religious fundamentalism is lumped together. Evangelicals are seen as terrorists! He also said that homosexuality is the Hammer. "A self-identified Christian in Europe today will often be asked first, "what do you think of homosexuality?" If the Christian says anything other than total acceptance and "celebration" of the lifestyle, he is immediately branded a bigot." Christians are being battered by these two hardened concepts. Thanks for your encouraging piece. Many christians today are often biblically illiterate because exegetical preaching has fallen on hard times. Thanks again. jonathan
